Review by عبدالرحمن بن سلطان

The Accuser, the latest album by Abigail Williams, is a powerful and intense offering that showcases the band's mastery of black metal. The album is a dark and brooding journey through the depths of the human psyche, exploring themes of betrayal, revenge, and redemption.

From the opening track, "Path of Broken Glass," the listener is plunged into a world of crushing riffs and ferocious drumming. The vocals, provided by frontman Ken Sorceron, are raw and visceral, adding to the sense of urgency and intensity that permeates the entire album.

Tracks like "Lost Communion" and "The Cold Lines" showcase the band's ability to create haunting melodies that are as beautiful as they are menacing. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with intricate solos and harmonies that add depth and texture to the songs.

The production on The Accuser is top-notch, with every instrument and vocal perfectly balanced and crystal clear. The album has a polished sheen that is rare in the black metal genre, but it doesn't detract from the raw aggression and emotion that Abigail Williams brings to their music.

Ken Bergeron temporarily disbanded Abigail Williams following a complicated economic/personal situation, but reformed it months later and released The Accuser in 2015. The album starts with a nebulous D-based sulfuric drone, "Path of Broken Glass", which sounds identical to Horna's tracks on Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne, cathartic but compositionally banal. "The Cold Lines" sounds like a miniature of Agalloch/Opeth, "Out of the Outer Darkness" is another cathartic carefree blast in the vein of Ildjarn and early Lord Belial, but "Will, Wish and Desire" subverts everything jumping into Nargaroth/Austere-like major-key balladry. "Godhead" sounds like a post-Trist/Blut Aus Nord Depressive Black hybrid, "Forever Kingdom of Dirt" excellently balances blast-beat dissonance and open-sounding pastoral chording in a very natural way, "Lost Communion" sounds more feral than usual, and closing cut "Nuummite" is based over absurd Pink Floyd-like Psychedelic/Blues Rock honky open-chord guitar tones not unlike "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".The guitar's production is so saturated to cross low-fidelity territory, with increases the spontaneity factor. This, coupled with the more liberating songwriting, makes Abigail Williams less bound to stereotypes and cliches: going from Dimmu Borgir plagiarism to such a demonstration of variety is a beautiful intent, and results in the project's best album to date, even if not exactly consistent.Highlights: "Will, Wish and Desire", "Forever Kingdom of Dirt", "Nuummite".
